Oral and maxillofacial trauma, or facial trauma, as it is better known, involves injury to the visceral skull region.
Facial TraumaOne of the most common types of facial injuries is skeletal fractures. Most of them result from sports accidents, traffic accidents, while many are work accidents and interpersonal violence.
Trauma to the orofacial region, or facial trauma, as it is better known, involves injury to the visceral skull region (frontal region, orbital cavities, zygomatic bones, upper and lower jaws).
Fractures involve one or more of the following anatomical elements

Injury to the above structures can affect vision, the ability to breathe, speak, hear, and swallow.
Treatment most often requires hospitalization. The principles of treatment for vertebral skull fractures are the same as those for fractures of other bones, e.g. femur, humerus, etc.
The affected parts must be realigned and immobilized for a sufficient period of time to heal.
This period, 6 or more weeks, depends on the complexity of the fractures and the age of the patient.
Facial TraumaIn the case of a fracture in the upper or lower jaw, for example, metal brackets can either be placed on the upper and lower teeth and connected to each other with rubber bands to immobilize the lower jaw to the upper one, or plates/screws can be placed to achieve immobilization of the fractures without immobilizing the jaws.
Often, patients who present with facial trauma have other health problems that complicate the treatment plan and rehabilitation.
Oral and maxillofacial surgeons have the necessary training to comprehensively manage the patient and the cooperation/assistance of other medical specialties is required.
During recovery and when there is immobilization of the lower jaw on the upper jaw, the oral and maxillofacial surgeon recommends a liquid or soft diet which contributes to the patient’s recovery by keeping him in good condition despite the inability to chew.
After discharge from the hospital, instructions are given for continuing treatment and oral/facial care at home while the patient is monitored at regular intervals until the end of recovery
