Why might I need a bone graft?

There are several reasons why a patient may need a bone graft in the jaw.

Bone loss can occur as a result of periodontal disease or after the loss of natural teeth. This process, known as bone resorption, gradually reduces the volume of the jawbone. In more extensive cases, it can also affect facial support and alter the appearance of the jaw and lower face.

Rebuilding lost bone helps restore adequate bone volume and prepares the area for further treatment.

Bone grafting is also commonly performed before certain dental procedures, particularly dental implant placement.

Dental implants are placed directly into the jawbone and require sufficient bone volume and quality to achieve adequate stability. When significant bone loss is present, a bone graft may be performed first to create a suitable foundation for implant placement.

Who is a candidate for bone grafting?

Patients who have experienced bone loss in the jaw and need to restore bone volume may be candidates for bone grafting.

Dr Panagiotis Sennis assesses each patient individually through a clinical examination and appropriate imaging. Specialized X-rays or three-dimensional imaging may be used to evaluate the amount and condition of the available bone and determine whether bone grafting or another oral surgical procedure is appropriate.

The treatment plan depends on the degree of bone loss, the location of the defect, the patient’s oral and general health, and the type of future restoration being considered.
