Cosmetic Dentistry and Tooth Replacement: What You Need to Know

Cosmetic dentistry is not only about appearance. It also plays an important role in restoring oral health and function. Tooth loss at any age can affect both self-confidence and everyday activities such as chewing and speaking. If you have lost one or more teeth because of tooth decay, periodontal disease or trauma, modern treatment options can restore both the function and appearance of your smile.

Regardless of your age, genetic and environmental factors can affect your teeth at different stages of life. If you have a family history of weak teeth or have lost teeth because of an accident, periodontitis, severe decay or another dental problem, you may already be considering dentures, bridges or dental implants, even if you are only in your thirties or forties.

There are several options available when teeth are severely damaged, weak or need to be removed. Below, you can learn more about the main solutions for replacing one or more missing teeth.

When should you take action?

Every patient has different dental needs and different factors that affect oral health.

A dental bridge can replace one or more missing teeth, as can a dental implant. Before choosing a treatment, it is important to consider the available options.

With a conventional dental bridge, the dentist usually places custom-made crowns on the teeth on either side of the gap. These supporting teeth need to be prepared, and in some cases they may otherwise be completely healthy. An artificial tooth, known as a pontic, is then attached between the crowns to replace the missing tooth.

There are three main types of dental bridges

  • Traditional bridge: requires crowns to be placed on the teeth on either side of the missing tooth.
  • Cantilever bridge: may be used when supporting teeth are available on only one side of the gap.
  • Maryland bridge: consists of a replacement tooth supported by a framework with wings that are bonded to the neighbouring teeth without extensive tooth preparation. These restorations are often used in selected or temporary cases.

Dental bridges can be an effective solution, but some restorations may need replacement after several years. Over time, the supporting teeth may also develop problems, which can make future replacement more complex.

For some patients, a dental implant may offer a more suitable long-term solution. Implants replace the missing tooth without requiring preparation of the neighbouring teeth and also help maintain the bone in the area of the missing tooth.

Dental Implants: A Modern Approach to Cosmetic Dentistry

Dental implants are one of the main options for patients seeking a long-term solution that combines function with a natural-looking result.

The implant is placed in the jawbone and acts as an artificial tooth root. Once restored with a crown, bridge or other prosthetic solution, it provides a stable foundation that closely resembles the function of a natural tooth.

Advantages of dental implants

  • No preparation of healthy neighbouring teeth is required
  • They help preserve the jawbone in the area of the missing tooth
  • They can provide a long-lasting solution with proper care
  • They restore the appearance of the smile and support normal oral function
